Areas of expertise

Dr. Sumantra Maitra is the Director of research and outreach, at the American Ideas Institute, a senior fellow at the Center for Renewing America, and a senior editor at The American Conservative. He is also a senior contributor to The Federalist,  and an elected, Associate Fellow at the Royal Historical Society, London.

He appears regularly as a foreign policy analyst at Fox and Friends, and Fox and Friends First, and has taken part in the Tucker Carlson Show. He is a former fellow at the Center for the National Interest, and at the James G Martin Center for Academic Renewal. He has also advised congressmen and senators and presidential candidates, in personal capacity.

He coined the doctrine of “Dormant NATO”. His book, “Sources of Russian Aggression”, is out from Lexington (Rowman and Littlefield) in May, 2024.

His academic essays and peer-reviewed articles have been published in Canadian Military Journal, Centre for Land Warfare Studies Journal, Political Studies Review, International Affairs, and the International Journal. His most recent paper was on the war in Ukraine and a lost opportunity of a grand bargain, at the International Journal, Canada, published in Spring 2023.

He chaired the National Conservative Conference foreign policy panel in London, 2023, and has spoken at various other conferences in the US, the UK, and Europe.

He holds a Master of International Studies with credit from the University of Otago, New Zealand, where he was awarded a Coursework Masters scholarship, with distinctions in International Politics, and Global Trade and Macroeconomics. He completed his PhD in International Relations at the University of Nottingham, UK, with a Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship in Research Excellence.
